there's a problem inherent in your question...there's nothing "tried and true!" would it be fair if we said the same about a type of person?! what i mean to say is, even though two different gouramis might be the same species, they will have different character. i say this because in my community tank i've got 2 angles, a half black and a gold veil (with very low flowing fins) and neither one has ever had a fin nipped in the 3 months i've had my tank.
they're with the following fish
- 2 rainbows
- 3 dwarf gouramis
- 2 algae eaters
- 1 clown loach
- 1 platy
- 2 tiger barbs
- 5 neon tetras
- 2 bettas (m/f)
except for my male betta, no other fish has so far been attacked or nipped within this configuration of fish, so i find it succesful for me, though i've heard strong opinions against the tiger barbs and the dwarf gouramis from other people.
your best bet? trial and error (in my opinion of course!)
