bigsloe,
I am still learning with regard to slatwater but ..
I do not think you can use live rock in this manner. Live Rock and Plain / Dead Rock are really the same material at the base. What makes Live Rock live is the critters and organisms living on it. SO if you too a piece a live rock from a saltwater set up and placed it in freshwater it will not support the continued life of the critters, algae etc. that need the saltwater. It would also need to be scrubbed before putting it into the freshwater to get all the material off that would pollute that environment.
You might be able to have some amount of rock that was used in a freshwater system that you later added to saltwater. For example I have some lace rock in my saltwater tank. It was not live when I put it in. It is now getting covered in Algae and has some amount of critters living in it. I went from the store shelf to the saltwater tank but I can not think of a good reason that you could not go from freshwater to a saltwater environment.
