You are both correct in that pure ammonia could be overdosed and I was fairly concerned of that initially. The counter argument is that pure ammonia lets you pick an exact amount to dose as opposed to the dead and decaying matter which is random and could be too high or too low. I think either approach works. I have only set up 1 salt tank so far but I did not have to worry about ammonia since the live rock die off created a sufficient spike to get the cycle going. In my mind that is ideal although I am sure there are arguments for introducing additional ammonia as well.
