need help with fin and tail rot
This is my first post on this wonderful forum.
I have been reading all the great help for a couple of weeks and now I need some help. I have fin and tail rot ( I think) and bought maracyn-two. Can I use it with an african frog and guppie babies?

no it would probably not be safe with a frog. can ya move hime to another tank.
frogs are very sensitive to enviornment changes such as chemicals and crap like that which is why scientists use them as bioindicators, when the water is poluted the frogs start growing extra limbs and stuff like that.

Thanks,
That is what I was afraid of , that the med would not be good.
I don't have another tank to put him in now, but may just go get another small one for a q/t tank for the future.
Thanks for your help.

To add to the importance of a quarantine or hospital tank, you should know that antibiotics like Maracyn are designed to kill bacteria and they meds are not programed to kill off one bacteria versus another, so you may be hurting your main tank should the antibiotic also kill off the benificial bacteria. Typically, a quarantine tank or hospital tank is going to be a lot smaller than the size of the main tank and so if you kill off the good bacteria, it is a bit easier to keep up with water changes and such since the sick fish would then be in an uncycled tank. The trick would be too keep a close eye on ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels at all times in any tank you dose with medications.
However, when you are left with little choice, I agree that you have to do what it takes to get fish healthy again so just keep the bacteria thing in mind when you start treatment with antibiotics so you can act accordingly to any side effects from it. I should also point out that in some cases, it is always best to treat the entire main tank for some illnesses or diseases since some can be contagous or remain in the tank even if you remove the fish with the symptoms. I dont think this is the case here, but it could be since again, none of us can do much more than make an educated guess as to the true nature of the problem.

I don't have another tank, so I am treating my tank now.I added the second treatment tonite according to the directions.
I did take the frog out and put him another bowl.
Well let you know how it goes.
Thanks for your help.
I think this is the greatest thing for all of us beginners.

I am sooo happy to report that I treated the tank for the tail and fin rot (after I removed the frog to another bowl) and I didn't loose a fish!!!
I did a water change and put the frog back, and even the guppy fry made it with no problem.
One question though, will the missing parts on the tails grow back at some point? They are swimming fine, but just feel bad when I look at them.
