Why do they sell fish that are going to get too big? I know it did not say on the little tag by the tank he was in that he would get that big!

Too big for you and probably 98% of the market but there are a few of us insane hobbyists that have dreams of tanks bigger than my current bedroom and will need fish to fill them once I get it built along with the new house. If I can squeeze in something a little over 20,000 gallons I should have room for an ID shark, maybe a school of tinfoil barbs and a pacu although the pacu might be pushing it a bit.
In all honesty, they usually don't get too big. They usually either die from the infections and related health issues or are stunted in smaller aquariums living shorter than normal lives. Looking at it from the other side of the coin, in the wild over 98% of young never make it to adulthood.
Give him the largest home you can, a good diet, plenty of clean water and position large plants along the glass to break up any tendency to rub back and forth along the walls. If you're using plastic plants, Aquarium Systems offers a line of Fancy Plants that can actually be attached to the glass walls.
Take a notepad to the store in the future, write down the names of any fish you feel you have to have, come home, research them a little bit, then go back to get the ones you feel you can provide a good home for. You'll save a lot of headache in the future that way.
