Gold fish Koi are some of the messy marvins of the fish. It can be done but they will outgrow the tank sooner than later. Keep up your water changes and tests.

Just to support JD here, Koi get HUGE which is why they are usually kept in ponds. They are a carp so if you ever went fishing or know some one who does (which is likely seeing as you are from Missouri), ask them how big they can get. In Wisconsin, where I live, I have caught carp as big as 25 pounds. Until a law was passed about 10 years ago, the indian here used to spear them rather than fish for them. They are super duper messy fish just like JD said. I used to landscape and deal with koi ponds alot so this is how I know.

okay so koi don't really sound like a road i want to go down i just can't find anything.. i was going to go with a tropical tank the weather we just had changed my mind on that it totaly caught me by surprise i was competely unprepaired my electric was off for 24 hours and it got down to 28 degrees in here i had nothing to heat with so i took all the candles in my home and lite them and put them in my animal room every thing was fine except i lost my 2 1/2 yr old python pandora it upset me so much but i was reqally thank full there were no fish in my tank because the water got sooo cold i now have an extra sorce of heat that worked great while electric was off yet again from this storm yesterday i just dont want to take any chances if i could even find something that would run on batteries while in power outages to keep atleast the fish tank heater working i would go with tropical but as it stands now i'm just to afraid of losing warmer bodied fish. any suggestions

Belive it or not, all of the bluegill species from our area are coldwater species, plus they look good. They can tolerate temps down to 55*.

really are bluegill and sunperch in the same family? and were would i get these so late in the year can't really just go out and hook me one i dont think they would bite

Yes they are in the same family, check with a local fish breeding farm, I know there shauold be some in your area. If you can find a local pond you could probably catch some when the weather warms up a bit. Fish stil have to eat in the winter as well. Just a little more difficult to find in the winter. I have had luck catching them in the winter from an indoor public fishing dock.
