Quick question
For our 55 gal community tank I recently purchased a Rena Filstar XP2 canister filter in addition to our 2 head power filter that hangs on the back. The canister filter came with about 7 or 8 bio stars (can't remember). Is this enough or should I purchase some more?

Re: Quick question
Although I've never used that style of filter before, I would assume they would provide you with everything you needed to get started. That being said, if you have additional room within your filter for extra filter media, I can't think of any reason not to add more.

There is lots of room for plenty more bio balls, stars, etc. but I'm not sure how much is tooooo much.

Re: Quick question
Too much water current sure, but filtration? Filtration is always a plus I would say.. right?

Re: Quick question
Ah..unless we are talking saltwater..need plenty of flow but yes, typically fresh does not require or even enjoy a strong flow.

Re: Quick question
I didn't mean too much filtration, I just meant is there a limit to the amount of bio stars in the filter body itself. Like I said it came with about 6-10 stars I forgot to count but there is room for plenty more? How many more if any should I add?

Re: Quick question
While I'm thinking about it. This same tank (55 gal. community) also has a dual head power filter that hangs off the back, I have a power head in the back right corner for airration, & a bubble curtian in the back with a seperat air pump just for the curtian. I changed filter bags in the canister with black, & white carbor bags, filters in the dual head, (rinsed all filter bags) & 20% H20 change but the water isn't crystal clear. It seems to be a bit filmy, hazy, not sure what word to use just isn't all that clear. Any solutions?

Did you do all of that within one day? Could be too much cleaning all at once, causing some of your beneficial bacteria to die off. That would lead to a bacteria bloom, which would be the hazyness you see now, as the bacteria tries to regrow. It's a posibility at least. How long have you had the tank set up, and did you cycle it already? When you rinsed all the filter bags did you use tap water or fishtank water?

It's best to start your own thread in order to have your questions asked.. I'll see if I can remember how to move your post into a new thread, then I'll answer your questions as best as I can.

1st thanks for moving the Guppie question so I can keep my own thread for a quick reference.
The H20 was hazy prior to the maintenance thats why we did H20 change, & filter change. The tank has been set up about 3 months, The new canister filter about 1 month. When I rinsed the carbon bags in the canister filter, & the 2 filter packs for the dual head power filter I used tap H20 just to get the residual carbon out of it.
