Sick Ryukin

Hi,

I am new to this site, I have a ryukin who about a week ago stopped eating. He then started to have clear feces with little white lines in it. I was told and now on day 3 to try the all in one meds by tetra. Yesterday he started to swim upside down. He is very bloated and struggles to stay upright. If he won't eat how do I treat him with high fiber?

Hi Heartytime and welcome to FTF. I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

It sounds to me like your fish either had bloat, or some sort of internal parasite. Considering how common bloat can be for fancy goldfish, I would likely assume thats what it was. Preventing it is usually easier than treating it. Feeding sinking pellets or granuals rather than floating flakes is usually a good idea. Having at least one day of no feeding is also recommended. Pea's with the skins removed are very high in fiber and a great thing to feed to goldfish from time to time. There are some medications out there that can help as well, although to be honest their names escape me at the moment. I've also read that adding a bit of salt can help, though I've never tested that theory.

thank you for taking the time to reply.... i fed him sinking pelllets and was going to try the peas..... we will be buying a new fresh water fish...any suggestions....

We would need to know more about your aquariums setup in order to help you choose new fish. How many gallons is your fish tank? Do you have a heater? What type of filtration do you have? Do you have any other fish currently living in your tank?

i just bought a 26 gallon bow front aquarium....its has large cartridge filter system and a heater...never used the heater with Sam.... have no other fish..... was going to wait to put in some live plants since i just got it.....

Welcome Heartytime and so sorry to hear about Sam. Sounds like a common problem with them. Usually caused by bloat/swim bladder problems. I have know many fishy people to swear by and use squashed peas..it does work.
