starting fresh

I have just recieved a 120 gallon tank and am wondering what the bast stuff is to get for it. my plans are to do freshwater for a few years then switch to salt when i get used to having a tank again. i believe it has been about 10 years so i am a bit out of the loop. any hints on filters, powerheads, heaters, or fish would be much appreciated.

You have a ton of options when it comes to fish. I would find out what you like, see what'll work with your tank (many things will) and go from there. If you've got any specific questions about compatibility or what-not, let us know.

There's a lot of different opinions about which equipment to use, and it'll somewhat depend a bit on the fish you plan on keeping as well. For filters a good canister plus a hang on the back style power filter would likely work well for most setups. Good canister company's would be Ehiem (pro versions only, not ecco) and Fluval. For power filters, I really like Aquaclears. I like Visatherm Stealth heaters personally. Don't have a lot of experiance with power heads, but I've been using an aquaclear one for awhile now with no problems. Hope that helps some.
