Aquarium cycling

I just bought a 30g aquarium and am currently in the process of setting it up. I have had the water "circulating" for a week now, but have not added fish yet.

How important is this to be done on a freshwater tank? My mother-in-law (self proclaimed fish expert) says its not necessary since it's not a saltwater tank. How true is this? Thanks!

Absolutely 100 % NOT TRUE. All tanks need to be cycled, fresh and salt. It takes a while but it is worth the effort and no fish are harmed in the process...good for you for taking the initiative and reading/researching BEFORE hitting a problem. We also have videos on the topic but if you have any trouble finding them just give a shout and wave a flipper..someone will swim you in the right direction.
