Hi folks,
My name is Blair, I live in Ottawa, ON. I've been keeping freshwater fish for well over a decade and slowly lost interest in the hobby. I explored many species of different biotopes, aggressive cichlids to peaceful tetras. After having fish in my tank for 4-5 years I'd grow bored and want them changed for something else. About 8 months ago I lost my redheaded severum, which was my favorite by far, and tore down my tank. I gave my remaining livestock to friends, who appreciate them greatly and take very good care of them, but I was so utterly sick and tired of freshwater.
It was nice, don't get me wrong. Beautiful fish, great personalities, just do a water change a week, clean the filter once a month and you're good! But what about someone who wants to get their hands a little wet?
For me, I wanted more involvement with nurturing my livestock, I read on saltwater tanks for years and finally decided I'm going to give this a shot. I have been considering this for many years, but did not want to explore a hobby which relies heavily on wild caught specimens without having a full 100% commitment to my tank. Finally I've decided to make the commitment and move to saltwater.
My greatest concern was my tank size, I have very limited space with an infant child in a 1 bedroom apartment, so 60 gallons is where its staying until I move in september. I felt comfortable that although it was small, it wasnt so small that i couldnt work with it. So I began to look for a substrate. I grew up in Prince edward island of canada, and managed to export approx 1/2 m^3 of the sand wet and into the tank within 18 hours of its removal, and I left it to cycle. This was in October, and in february I decided that this has been running with nothing long enough! Its time to put something in it! I went and bought 20 lbs of live rock...
Pet rocks!! YES!!!! It kicked my wallet pretty hard so it stopped there for a while. A few weeks later I obtained some hermit crabs and snails to aleviate my constant turning of the sand, the other day I bought 2 A. Ocellaris clowns.
I've had ups and downs with it, I hope by joining this forum we can share out challenges and experiences so everyone can learn and walk away with something of value (Knowledge is priceless!).
I hope to speak with you all again very soon.
Cheers
