I've only had small gravel, since I like to keep cory's and loaches. to me it seems easier to clean, but others have said once you get the hang of the sand (for vacuuming) it is not too different.......partly it depends on the type of fish you want etc.
The rena is a good choice, very flexible with the type of media you use, quick and easy to work with.
now comes the fun part......but choose carefully.
Have you looked at the fishless cycling video.....you will need to get some straight ammonia. You can get it at ACE hardware. The quart bottle should be plenty, theirs is a stonger solution than most other brands so go easy on the drops till you see what it does. Don't clean or dispose of the media from your current tank. When you get ready, just put it in your rena. After you get some water in the bottom of your tank, you can put several scoops of gravel (without rinsing it) into your tank....that will really speed things up.
