filter system for a 42gal hex

I am getting a 42 gal Hex tank from a family friend, he said it needs a new filter and the filter is about $90. I've looked at some different filter online for a 42 gal hex and I haven't been able to find anything that is even close to $90.

So my question is what type of filter/system should I get? I am new to this, as I haven't had a tank in over 20 years. I am planning to get some live plants and angelfish for the tank. Suggestions would also be appreciated.

I would think a simple power filter rated for a 60g tank or so would be sufficiant filtration. I personally like the brand Aquaclear, but there are many other good products out there as well. If you really wanted you could do a small canister filter instead, but I find them to be a little less 'user friendly' than power filters (maintenence can be a bit trickier, but you do get a lot of filter for your buck).

IME, aquaclear is just about the worst filter on the market.....especially for a tank that tends to be on the deeper side. The angle the water comes off in is just not quite right, goes to straight into the water and so it just does not move the surface around to get any kind of aeration. A rena XP2 (rated for 75 gallons) canister would really perform well for you and the maintenance is a snap. Not sure of the opening size, but if the spray bar is too long you can always take the end cap off and cut it shorter. If you have it spray accross the top of the water, it does not even need to be suction cupped down, the backward force will just keep it in place.
