Red Sea 130D
A quick question, which, I'm sure, will turn into a looooong discussion-
What do you folks think of these? I've been out of the saltwater game for years, and have forgotten pretty much everything...
Thanks.

Wow... either no one has any opinions on this, or this is one unfriendly forum...

Re: Red Sea 130D
Again, "What do you think of these?" is indeed a question. At first (and still somewhat) I was unsure about what "these" were exactly. Then I noticed the title and assumed you were speaking of the new Red Sea Max 130 set ups, which is why I edited my own post to include a clarification to be sure we were talking about the same thing. I took the time to google and look in to what you were talking about. You still have not said yes/no. IF that is what you are talking about, I think it would be a nifty setup if it is as easy as they make it sound. Salties take some time to maintain and anything that can make it easier and more enjoyable is always going to be a plus. SO, how about some thoughts on the system from your point of view...I would be interested.

Re: Red Sea 130D
(Yes- the Red Sea 130D is what I was talking about. I thought people would guess that, given that it was the subject...)
As I'm a neophyte, I really don't have an opinion- were I to accept the company line, I'd think they were the bee's knees... however, I sort of figured you folks would have a better idea if they're all they're cracked up to be...
In point of fact, I decided to go with an established 40G Hex with:
-remora protein skimmer (side hanging)
-metal halide (175watt) light
-65watt ( coralife) 50/50 (so I'm not sure I need the MH)
-waterfall style filter that hangs on back of tank
-2 power heads
-1 mandarin goby
-1 clownfish
-six stripe wrasse
- blue/yellow damsel
-2 blue chromis and some hermit crabs and turbo snails
-40 lbs of live rock(fiji )
-about 30lbs of sand
I think I recall that Hex tanks, because of their depth, are a grunt to light for LPS/ SPS, but I'm hoping I have enough for LPS.
Got this set-up for a steal; let's hope it's worth it...

For your tank's dimensions - I would definitely keep the MH... 175w of MH will have a heck of alot more penetration and concentrated light then 65 of PC (and from my experience... coralife bulbs, both PC and MH fall very short with output)

Re: Red Sea 130D
I'm seeing a couple instances of what might be aptasia, but I'm honestly having a bit of trouble telling on those pictures. It looks like you may have quite a bit of caulerpa (plant) growing through some of the rocks too.
That's a gorgeous mandarin and coral beauty.
Was the cyanobacteria (red slime down in the sand) there to begin with? Might be worth cutting back a touch on feeding while that clears up...
