Sorry Jenna, the black ich is actually a flatworm infection and you must kill on fish and in tank. The young flats will live in the substrate so a reinfestation will occur if the whole tank is not treated...problem could be what is in your tank..corals, inverts..?? Some treatments can be deadly to these.The worms can be controlled with various medications. Formalin based products or trichlorfon appear to be the best medications. In addition to the use of medications, any excessive buildup or organic material and debris should be siphoned from the aquarium several times during treatment. Since the young worms develop on the aquarium bottom, the removal of debris will aid in controlling the disease by reducing their numbers.
