some friends of mine were over the other day and we were all talking about fishing. apparently no one ever showed these boys how to dig a hole in the earth and find worms as they both felt the need to go to the store and buy them. i quickly pointed out the two or three dozen worms, chillin', on my back patio due to the rain that has recently fallen, with not much more than a shrug of intrest in return. little did they know, i was inspired.
my fishing experience is a whole lot of freshwater and delaware bay fishing in my youth and a little deep sea/tuna fishing, in the last few years. whenever i fished freshwater, it was always with worms. and never once have i purchased them. i only have this vague image in my head of an actuall "can of worms". i want to make one.
lately, i've been reading alot about these sorts of "enclosed eco systems" and see no reason why i can't make one that allows worms to flourish in a manner that facilitates a fisherman's occasional requirements for bait. i'm thinking of simply starting off with a large glass jar, filled first with an inch of stones on the bottom. i will then add a mixture of 75 to 80 topsoil with the rest being a compost material intended for vegatable gardening i have laying around. i'll then add worms from the patio and top the whole thing off with a chunk of something that is just sprouting from my back yard right now. (i think spring has sprung, ya know) it should all take up no more than 75 percent of the jar. i think i can at least make the jar live for now if i keep it somewhere, open and moist and give it a good bit of sunlight. i can add more compost as time progresses. maybe even give it as a gift in the future. that's the plan for now. any advice or knowledge on this subject would be awesome.
now i know that there are many questions than one might ask when they hear stories like this. so in advance, i will say, "yes, yes it is that boring in delaware sometimes."
