Re: Calling all Newbies
Hello fellow hobbyists, My name is Jeremy. Been looking around for a good forum site and this one seems to be very good. Thought I would introduce myself. I work as an Aquatic Biologist in Maryland. I've kept fish tanks of all types since I was old enough to be responsible for their maintenance. I currently have a 75 and a 5 gallon Saltwater tank and am in the process of re-starting a 30 gallon freshwater. My wife and I just recently had our first child, so in order to make room I took down a couple of my tanks. I hate having empty tanks in the shed, so I am re-starting the 30 gallon. Empty tanks are such a waste of opportunities!!!

Re: Calling all Newbies
Hi everyone. I just registered today. I've kept fish a long time, but haven't really been into the message boards up until now. I like small aquaria w/more fish than the "rules of thumb" suggest, live plants, and TONS of water changes (I'm fanatical about that stuff...it's actually bordering on OCD...we're talking 20% every other day! lol). My newest adventure is a primarily live-bearer 15 g which is only about half-full, by my standards (it only fully finished cycling 2 weeks ago, after all):
4 fancy guppies (& 9 1-week-old fry), eventually to be 9 total adults (4:5)
2 Showa koi swordtails, goal to be 4 total swords (1:3)
3 corydoras aeneus, planning to settle @ 5
The aquarium above is mainly for fun. I'm not trying to do any "serious" breeding, though I did want to allow some offspring to come around from time to time. It keeps my 3 kids happy. I let them each pick out some plastic "cheesy" plants, hermit-crab shells, and decorations, and then I put some anacharis in there (for now). A nice little piece of driftwood rounds out the aesthetics of the tank. It's a bit gaudy, but the aquarium is distinctly "us", which is what I wanted in the first place with it. The kids really enjoy helping me with the maintenance, feeding, etc. and they are learning a lot. They don't like having to wait a week or more to get new fish, though! Who does? lol
Recent excitement for me was the installation of R/O @ my house, and saving one of the corys after he lodged himself deep inside an empty hermit-crab shell (just decoration, we don't have any hermits in the aquarium). I had to use tweezers to rescue the cory, but he survived with a slightly damaged caudal fin to show for the experience. Aside from that, my fish are happy and active...a very positive experience w/this one thus far.
I also keep a 1-gallon "hospital", which will occasionally house a fancy betta.

Re: Calling all Newbies
I have not had enough coffee this morning to remember the name of a member, a few years back, who was experimenting with continuous water flow (change) in big tanks.
I think 50% once a week in all my tanks is enough for me
