I am assuming that the same would apply for SW filters, but with my FW filtration system, I usually keep a bucket of the water from a water change to rinse/clean off the bigger chunks of stuff from the filter media. This helps make sure that the bacteria doesnt die by cleaning it off with too hot/too cold of water and it does not get shocked by being submersed in water that is very different from the water it is used to.
Again, I am not sure if this would apply exactly to SW filter media so hopefully someone else can deny/confirm this info for you but logically, I would think it would be safe to do it this way.
