| The start of my new 75G Reef If you have not heard yet, I will be upgrading my 55g reef tank to a 75g reef tank with a 20 gallon long sump. I have ran out of room in my 55 for fish and equipment. I need a wider tank, plus this is as big as I can go. (4ft wide in our apt, GF says so!) I will start to post pictures of various things as I acquire them.
In the 75g tank I will use a deep sandbed of 4'', with 180lbs of sand. I also will have about 110 lbs of live rock. I plan on using a sump, exactly what GM333 has already posted for his DIY sump/refugium. In the sump I will have some more live sand and live rock, whatever is in my current Aquafuge, which also includes a TON of Chaetomorpha. I will also use 2-200 watt heaters, in the sump. And finally....I will use an ASM G-1 in sump skimmer. This is going to be so fun to setup. I can not wait until all my equipment is in my sump and not in my display! It will most likely take me a bit to gather the pumps and plumbing.
Tomorrow I am picking up the black stand and black tank. I will also pick up a 20 gallon long tank for the sump. I can then begin to make my sump.
Stay tuned for Pics!!! |

| Re: The start of my new 75G Reef Looks like you are going to have to cut a brace out to get the refugium in. |

| Re: The start of my new 75G Reef I can drop it in from the top actually. Once I get it all made up, Ill take off the tank and drop it in. However once its in, thats another story.... I would like to think if I do have to cut that middle brace, the stand should hold. I know someone who has the same stand, but they have a 90G on it. It should be able to hold without the front middle brace in it. Fingers crossed!
Now that I was looking at it, I cant remove the front brace, this is what the doors close to. If I remove it I will have a hole between the two doors. There is a brace on the rear of the stand I can remove or move to make things work.

| Re: The start of my new 75G Reef If the tank will fit through the back I would cut the brace and put in another brace that can be taken out if necessary. If not you will have to totally dismantle the tank to take out the refugium if it ever leaks or cracks. After a year of having the tank up you dont want to have to do this. |

| Re: The start of my new 75G Reef Sounds like a plan, Ill reconfigure the back brace so I can slide the tank in and out. Another thought, if I needed to get at it in the case of an emergency, I would probably brace the front of the tank and remove the front center peice. It just makes everything easier, IMO.
So ill drop it in from the top as planned, and then if needed remove the front one. Ill just have to remember to re enforce the front BEFORE taking the brace out! hahah
Im going to get the glass baffles tomorrow from the local glass shop. |

| Re: The start of my new 75G Reef Just ordered a CPR CS90(600gph) overflow box with the Aqua Lifter aswell. I now need a return pump, skimmer, and plumbing parts and we should be golden for a test run..... That is of course after it all magically puts itself all together... Pictures to follow... |

| Re: The start of my new 75G Reef Please tell me your going to hard plumb?
If so make sure you add some quickrelease joints so you dont have to cut any pvc after gluing it all together. |

| Re: The start of my new 75G Reef Just to fill you guys in a bit.... Overflow is coming tomorrow, SWEET!
I am almost finished with making a replica of GM333's sump/Refuge. However, I used 1/4'' plexiglass from Home Depot to create the baffles for the sump. I siliconed them in with White GE Silicone I window and door caulk, 100% silicone no mold inhibiters. I know not the prettiest, its what I had in my truck from work, it got used!!!! I just have to add in the last over for my return section. I went with three baffles towards the return pump(over, under, over) to slow down flow and reduce air bubbles. Ill post some pics as soon as I am done.
I am trying to get a list of plumbing supplies together for the fun part. The plumbers at work will get me all the fittings I need.("T"'s, valves, check valves, elbows, and unions.) I just have to tell them what I need. DOUBLE SWEET!
Ill keep ya posted... |
