Best between the two

Hi,

I just started a plant tank after 2 years, and wanted to know between the two, which one does better for cleaning algae,

Otos vs. Amano Shrimps.

Just about everything I have read says that Ottos are the way to go. Which is saying something since it is hard to get the "experts" to agree on much of anything as far as the internet goes.

Hey Memphis...welcome to our forum!!

IME there is no simple critter fix here...

If you are talking about soft green algae in a planted tank, the best all around critter is, hands down, the Nerite snail.

Ottos are good also, I always keep a handful in the tank for touch up.

Soft green algae is not a problem in planted or unplanted tanks, it is very easy to induce or made to go away.

Unfortunately, the real nasty algae that can ruin a planted tank are not eaten by snails, ottos, shrimp or plecos.

These problem algae, in a planted tank, are controlled by husbandry, macro nutrient supplementation, micro nutrient supplementation consistency and management, light, Carbon supplementation and consistency, plus pruning and preening.

My answer is Other...ottos and shrimp are cool little critters, that will NOT be much help with most algae you will encounter in a planted tank.

At the local fish store in their two live plant tanks, they have amano shrimp in there and they are wonderful to watch and they are quite the little fat ones too...

Re: Best between the two

Thanks for all your replies. So far in a 40 gallon, i have about 10 otos, and 8Amano Shrimps, and roughly 7 Cherry shrimp. I have a Acrylic Tank, so cleaning that Green algae on the tank is rather rough, so would you think the Nerite Snails will take care of that? or will it be too hard? Otos arent doing much against the green algae on the tank, and as of now, i rather not put a pleco in the tank, they get too big and will destroy the plant setup.

Re: Best between the two

Like I said before...critters are only really effective when mixed with good algae fighting husbandry.

There is no question a handful .. 6-8 Nerite snails will keep green algae on plants under control without harming the plants. They also will not reproduce in fw which is a plus for non snail lovers. They are NitrAte sensitive so water changes and moderate NitrAte levels are required.

IME even the so called plant safe varieties of plecos sooner or later are seduced by the dark side causing major problems in a planted tank.

Algae on the glass (plastic)

1. Diatoms...small brown circles, very hard, in your case a plastic scraper. Ottos will eat it

2. Green spot algae..same as 1

3. Green Dust algae...the algae that coats your glass/plastic tank walls that you are continually trying to wipe off once or twice a week.

This nuisance algae is a Zoospore. When you scrape it or wipe it, it actually swims around in the tank for 10 - 15 minutes and then begins to reattach itself to the glass.

Just recently a cure has been discovered. The cure, however, requires a little patience.

You simply let the Zoospore run out its cycle. Let it grow on the glass and form a thick coating, sometimes you cannot see through the glass. It takes about two weeks and lot of whining from others in the house, but at that point the algae has changed its physical structure and will literally fall off the glass in sheets with a light scrape.

You then vacuum the stuff off the bottom, do a water change and you will not see it again for a long time. I just recently had an outbreak, have not seen it for years, and found the technique works great. I have seen reports that some folks have had to repeat it a month later, but then it was gone.
