is there some special technique to get your planted tank to look nice? right now ive just been "winging" it

i can get better pics on a specific plant if you need but anything to get my tank to look better would be nice .. i might put some of the plants in my 10 gal for the little puffer =] right now theres 2 java ferns in there tht are kinda small

I like to group all the plants of one certain type together, rather than space them throughout. There are many, many ways to landscape a "horizon" in your tank....I found comments on http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2006.cgi the tanks very interesting. The comments from the judges are at the very bottom of the page.

I also don't plant everything in the middle (width-wise) in the tank, I try to stagger back to front to try and create depth. I also try to mix texture. Right now I am almost relying solely on texture actually, because I have no color in the plants except for the foreground wendtii.

I love the reds you have, and your plants are growing really well. Great job!

I have learned sometimes I just have to keep messing around until I like it. I'll have all my plants planted, go to sit back and relax....and get up and replant a plant 2" over....lol....

wow on that site if you look in the gallery the tankw ith the waterfall looks amazing .. but i think i know exactly how im gunna layout my tank, thanks

i think that right now your tank looks very natural, which is a good thing so that your fish feel more "at home." but if you dont like it you can always try putting your plants near the back corners of you tank so that your fish have a nice hiding place and so that it looks more planned and groomed.

This is probably irrelavant by now but I like to layer my plants, meaning taller ones and really leafy ones in back with shorter and slimmer plants in middle and front with a large peice of driftwood, ornament, or rock in the center.

Hey, looks good! What kind of gravel or sand do you have? It's really cool looking and I am thinking of using dark gravel on my small tank!

right now its just plain black gravel
IMO (and TG agrees) black gravel and sand are the best 'eye candy' substrates, as they realyl make your fish's colors stand out
