Dog Face Puffer & Others

Hey I have finished cycling my tank fishless for 6 weeks.
My first additions were a Picasso trigger and Volitan Lion fish. They have been doing great. Eating well and very socialalble.
So I wanted to stick with a more aggressive style, meat eating tank.
I picked up a Dog face puffer and Blue line grouper. Got them yesterday.
The grouper is eating very well (hopefully he wont grow to fast) however he has some white spots I am concerned about.

I have not seen the puffer eat. He changes colors too, from like a brown to almost all white. He also has aquired some weird markings under his lower jaw. The skin looks bubbly and rough. very strange. Is this normal? could it possible be a sting from the lion? Also wondering what to offer him to eat. Ive tried everything so far, but I may just need to wait a couple more days for him to build up an appettite. Thanks.

Re: Dog Face Puffer & Others

The white dots sound like they could be ich. As per the bubbles, I have no clue. I have almost the exact same fish, lion, trigger, and a porcupine puffer.

Often puffer fish come laden with ich. So I would start treating for that asap.

The bubbles sound like Furunculosis which are boil like bumps on the body.

Says here to treat:Furazone - green, furazone-light, erythromycin, or Kanamycin

could be Abdominal Dropsy or swimbladder disease to.

This unfortunately sounds like you need to set up a quarantine to treat the puffer.

Good luck ! Let me know what your diagnosis is.

Camdiddy, I rarely am this stern or opinionated, however, there is no way that tank should be that loaded now. I really don't want to be a downer but I believe you are headed for a lot of problems. You haven't filled out you profile so it is hard to tell what size tank you have and what type filtration.

At 6 weeks I would have one or two starters still in there and maybe 1 coral.

Re: Dog Face Puffer & Others

I realize that I have chosen species that will all grow very large. I intended to. They are all relatively small right now. I am looking into upgrading to a bigger setup soon. Right now my tank is 85 gallons with 2 cannister filters, skimmer and power head.

The puffers bubbly apperance changes. It almost looks now as if it has gone around his lower jaw.
I do have a qt tank I can put them in. Should I put the puffer and grouper in the qt tank? its only 20 gallons

Re: Dog Face Puffer & Others

Update: Ive got the puffer and grouper quarantined. Gave them both a medicated fresh water dip. Both seem to be doing better. The bubbly effect seems to be getting better. Ill try and post pics later.
