| Newbie With A Question I?ve always wanted to setup up an aquarium and now that I have the means to do so I?ve been doing a lot of reading about what?s all involved. I really wanted to set up a saltwater tank because I think saltwater fish are more attractive, but I started to think that maybe a saltwater tank for a first timer might not be the best idea. I was wondering what you guys thought, whether it?s better for someone new to start out with freshwater or as long as I do my research I?ll be fine starting out with saltwater. Any advice would be great. Thanks. |

| Re: Newbie With A Question Hello newbie Flame and welcome! My advice and opinion is to go right into the salt water. How about that! That make you happy! I say this because, no disrespect to freshies but, a fresh water is really easy to maintain and after awhile (as you said) salt water fish are well, more fascinating as well as colorful. Starting out in salt will give you tons more knowledge and practical experience. Down the road then if you wanted to get out of salt and go fresh you will have no problem at all.
As long as you go real slow and deliberate with your salt water adventure you will encounter little problems. I suggest starting out with at least a 30 gal. tank with a sump and protein skimmer. A built in over flow tank preferably. Use live rock and either sand or a fine substrate for the tank.
I'm not sure what you know so let's assume you understand about "cycling" the tank, if not we are here to help. Before you do anything though I would advise you to purchase the book; "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Robert M. Fenner. It is one if not the best book to have in your library. You will never stop learning from it! It is a complete work taking you from the set up to advanced aquarium keeping.
Again welcome and let the fun begin! Don't get overwhelmed, take things one step at a time and enjoy your journey!

| Re: Newbie With A Question I agree, the first tank I ever set up was a saltwater tank. Just do tons of research before anything else.
