| Re: Father looking into saltwater tank for baby girl!!!! I would recommend getting a protein skimmer to supplement your filter. IMO they are probably the most important part of any saltwater tank. They remove dissolved organic compounds and it's quite nasty what they get out of a seemingly clear tank. The AquaC Remora is a great skimmer. It's rated up to 75 gallon tanks so it will work very nicely in your 29. Plus you can still use it if you decide to upgrade tank size. If you get 1-2 lbs of live rock per gallon of water that will cover your biological filtration. Then you'll be set.
And you got it, make sure you get the salt level right and mixed up before adding the lr and ls. |

| Re: Father looking into saltwater tank for baby girl!!!! free mn_fuzkaAlso I do not know what you will be putting the tank on for a stand, but I would recommend you go to your local home repair store and talk to them about things you can use to secure furnature to the wall. If your stand is on carpet, as mine is (almost the same size tank) then it may be a little top heavy. Not that it would ever tip over! But I have a 3 yr old and a 6 mth old and I would not put it past either 1 of them to try 1 day when I am not looking to climb on it trying to get to the fishies!!! There are things you can attach to your stand and to studs that will keep it secure. Something to think about with kids running around.
I have power compact lights and am pretty happy with them, there are a lot of options for corals with them. Softies and LSP ...........
Just keep reading........ Take it all slow and you will do great! Happy reefing xx mn_fuzka xx

| Re: Father looking into saltwater tank for baby girl!!!! To add to Chads post, along with the 1-2lbs of live rock, you will need a deep sandbed aswell, 3-5'' or so. That will take care of the biological filtration for your tank, then all you will need is a protein skimmer. I feel the same way about skimmers as most people do, they are a must have with any sw setup. Along with removing doc's(dissolved organic compounds) they also oxygenate the water. Just my 0.2!

| Re: Father looking into saltwater tank for baby girl!!!! a lil update on what i did...
i returned the marineland filter... got a canister filter instead... i will get a skimmer in about a week...
i already got the water in the tank... took about a day to have all the salt dissolve and my salinity level is where it should be...
its between 1.022 and 1.023... added the live sand... and added the live rock... waiting for the sand to settle so i can turn on the filter and start the cycling process...
i did get a powerhead also... I have heard people saying that you can use a powerhead to simulate a current in the tnak? where is the best spot to put this?
thanks,
raphael |

| Re: Father looking into saltwater tank for baby girl!!!! Most tanks dont need powerheads if the filters have good water flowing in them otherwish in my opinion i'd put it opposite of your filter. |

| Re: Father looking into saltwater tank for baby girl!!!! If you have a dead spot where there's no water movement position the powerhead in a way that moves that area. Water flow is important, especially since you're doing a reef as many corals require different amounts of flow. It will help you combat algae by not having stagnant areas also. I have 2 powerheads in each back corner of the tank pointing towards the middle. When the currents met they kind of made a tornado and stirred up my sand so I had to point them at my live rock. Just a thought if you have any problems like that.
Sounds like you're on your way to a beautiful tank!

| Re: Father looking into saltwater tank for baby girl!!!! Did you rinse the sand in water to clean it a little before you poured it in? I ususally rinsed my sand before i put it in to prevent those bubbles from forming. Oherwise they will go away after awhile. |
