live rock

im live in south florida and am in the midst of an extended effort to setup a tank. extended mostly because of financial issues. A question i have is there is a reef within a few miles from my house. would it be possible to collect some of the smaller rocks to use as live rock in my own tank. as a note this is a healthy reef that supports a generous amount of life.

With the benefit of billions of gallons of water for dissolution of disease and parasites. Your aquarium is a totally different story.

The rocks are fine to use, but you still want to cure/quarantine them for a few weeks in a seperate tank to rid them of unwanted pests (bristle worms, mantis shrimp, etc.) and disease/protzoa/etc.
