what is a refugium? I've seen them in magazines and heard of them but don't know what they are for. Please help me in my ignorance in this.

So basicaly the refugium is an exstention to the main tank that consentrates on filtration and cleaning of the system? I am going to research this a little more. i might have future questions for you thank you for your time. And by the way i did look for previos post on the subject couldnt find them thanks for the links. speaking of not being able to find threads i was reading one today about lighting it had something to do about a formula on watts or something. for a reef tank can you help me find it
