| Any vacuum can be used for sand, you just don't want to push it into the sand. You are going to suck out some of the sand - its very hard to avoid doing so at all - but you shouldn't get too much. The trick is to hover the vacuums mouth above the sand where it can pick up anything sitting on top. I use a combination of a vacuum and a 1/4" hose to siphon my tank out. My vacuum has a wide mouth and isn't very sufficient unless I almost set it down on the sandbed, then it starts getting stuff out. The hose has a much smaller mouth and is more efficient at sucking up stuff sitting on the bottom of the tank without having to get too close to the sand itself. Both remove some of the sand out of the tank each time, but only a little. As far as I am aware they do not make vacuums specifically for use on sand, its all in the technique you use.
