| Rock Beauty angel I just picked one up from my LFS, and I just did some Reading, and it seems there main diet is sponges, the people at the store never mentioned that.
has anyone had any sauces with them eating flakes and mysis shrimp?
also after reading about how the foxface tang poisoned his tank owner with his spines. Ive noticed my purple tang and him fighting lots. are purple tangs poisonous?

| The prple tangs are not poisonous, just have some sharp barbs right before the tail, would not want to find out if they hurt or not. As far as the angel I am not to sure. |

| You need to contact who you bought the fish from and ask of their diet.

I think you may have made a mistake with getting this fish because it appears that they are like a few other saltwater fish that are sold too commonly and need a diet that it very hard for the average person to aquire in at least high enough amounts that are needed. It sounds as if this is really one of those cases since from what I also read on sponges in just the past couple of minutes, they are difficult to keep as well. I might try to return this fish before it dies and you are out of the money completely. I know that is harsh, I have had to do it myself, but it is usually the best thing.
The foxface Lo is poisonous, not the purple tang, as GM points out. I would certainly not want to find out how much it hurts to get stuck by your tang, especially since you risk getting it from the foxface in the process! My foxface is always sticking its fins out, in what I figure is a sort of 'warning' to other fish, but he is certainly the most meek fish in the tank overall. I think that story about the guy who got stung by a Foxface was a result of him trying to remove it from a powerhead or filter intake with his hands. He was ok though, I beleive, and from what I read, they are an unlikely fish to 'attack' you if you do not provoke it. I also dont think they are fatal in most, or any case really, but they hurt a lot I guess and unlike the lionfish venom, it is not easy to reduce the pain. My favorite LFS employee at the place I bought my foxface is a tiny little woman who weighs less than 110 pounds easily, got stung once by a foxface and had a bad reaction to it. I believe she cited her bumblee bee sting allergy as the reason for her larger than average bad reaction. |

| I talked to my LFS about the diet, they said it should take to the flakes I got for my other dwarf angels.
I have a over abundance of thin stalk Xenia's, so the fish can graze on that too.
I hope it can do good in my tank its a beautiful fish, but I can see why now that its price is 1/2 as cheap as the rest of the large angels.
oh and I just read that site it said it can eat finly choped meaty items, so maybe it will take to my Mysis shrip Quote: |
The diet in the aquarium should include vegetable matter such as marine algae and Spirulina, finely chopped meaty items, and high-quality angelfish preparations containing sponges.

| Well that is sweet then if you can keep it. To be honest, I only looked at the stats for the fish on that site and the first couple of sentances. I did not know that food with sponges in it was available. If you can get ahold of some of that, then you should be good.
So, in this tank you have other angels though? If so, what types are they?
Do they get along well with each other?
This angel of yours is not a dwarf variety I believe, but that is great for you since your tank should be able to support its size easily.
Best of luck to you! Keep us updated on how things are going so we can learn with you. |

Ya having a 180G tank, is the reason i want some of the more large angels, cuz there is room for them to grow and swim. And for my dwarf angels, i have a Coral beauty, Flame angel, and a Lemon peal angle. out of alll the marine fish i think the angel veriety has to be my favorite

| Well, that is good so long as they are getting along. I have read almost everywhere that one angel is usually the limit per tank. I did have two in my tank, a Bicolor and a Flame, which worked well for me because the more meek Bicolor was larger than the slightly tempermental Flame angel. If your tank is working out though, that is good. Just keep a good eye on things since you dont want to be stressing fish out too much. |

| I'll have to do some more research on this particular fish, but right off the top of my head I would suggest Formula One & Two for starters. Formula One Formula Two
I'm looking around for something with more sponge matter and if I find it I'll post up a link.
HTH,
Aaron

| Ah HA!!!!!! I think I can help you out a bit more here....
I went to the LFS tonight to pick up some frozen fish foods and took a look at the Formula One and Two packages. This is when I stumbled upon another product made by this exact same company...of course, right now I cannot remember the exact name of it but it was somewhere along the lines of "Angel Formula" and was made almost entirely of sponges. The package states that this food is what you are looking for here so I would check it out to see if you can find it in your area. I may just pick up a package later next week myself and if I do, I will tell you exactly what it is and maybe how to order it online if you cant find any near you. |
