What is the difference between Lr and base rock. I was gonna stack my live rock on top of my coral to keep it off the bottom. Then someone told me base rock helps in saving money...Im not clear on the rest of the response. What happened to the dry tab test kit? All i find is liquid drop test kits.

Base rock is typically dried out live rock or better what USED to be live rock. Live rock like the name says is rock pulled from the ocean that has many desirable and sometimes to so desirable organisms on it. I would agree, use some live rock to "seed" the tank and use base rock to fill in. Not only is it more economical but is better for the environment as well. The dry tabs are sort of falling out as liquid reagents are more accurate.

Lace base rock is one of my favorite. It is very porous, cheap and stacks nicely. I soak it for two days, rinse it off and toss it in. My seed (live rock) spreads to the base rock, in about two months, lost of purple algae.
