electric yellow cichlid

I fell in love at the lfs yesterday. 2 small cichlids, they are beautiful!! I didnt ask any questions, left the store before i bought them

Ive been surfing the net trying to find info.

Main Question: Can I put them in the same 55 gal fw tank with the 5 parrot fish (which are also in the cichlid family, I think). Its hard to find reliable info about the parrots. My water tests always show a Ph of 8.2 with high alklinity and hardness. gravel bottom right now, but could be changed out real easy, tho I run 2 UGFs as well as over the side of the tank filter. I clean the tank 2 times a week to keep nitrates down, parrots are big poopers

Re: electric yellow cichlid

Hey Orb,

The lack of info on your parrots is probably due to the fact that they are hybrid fish and so there is no information on how they would otherwise behave in a natural setting. IMO there are some 'unknowns' in mixing any different type of cichlids but this does not mean it is impossible or not worth a shot so long as you take into account each species particular quirks - for example, make sure that your parrots cannot swallow any tank mates.

In general, electric yellow cichlids would also be considered "messy" (i.e. "big poopers") to some extent so that is also something to consider. However, given enough room and addressing the various considerations of each fish, I still don't think that would be a reason to skip them entirely.

Re: electric yellow cichlid

lfs guy said no. so he sold me 2 green terror cichlids, they have been in the tank about an hour and so far so good. $4.75 each, so not a big investment. I just hope they dont mess with my parrots. I have a 10 gal stand by tank if they even try. They all seem to be giving each other a healthy respect so far. tx for your responds. Once again, its an experiment
