I had plans to use these specific algae eaters in an Altum Angelfish tank.

[1] Bristlenose pleco .... qty 1
[2] Otocinclus catfish ... qty 6
[3] Red Cherry shrimp ... qty 12 [continually re-stocked from a breeder tank]

However, I have been told by a reliable source that the Altums will dine on the Otocinclus catfish.

This is disappointing in that I had read many favorable reports regarding the superb effort the Otocinclus catfish put forth as an algae eater. It appears that I must find a more suitable tank mate to the Altums who can eat algae without being eaten by an Altum.

I would appreciate any and all recommendations as to who you feel are the TOP 5 algae eaters for a planted, freshwater aquarium - and capable of coexisting with Altum Angels [and likewise not damaging the Altum's fins and/or harrassing the Altums].

You might want to consider Olive Nerite Snails, Neritina reclivata.
They are incredible algae eaters and will not harm plants.
They will not reproduce in fresh water.

The problem with keeping Altum Anglefish is their size, and the fact that most true Altums are wild caught and have no hesitation to go after smaller critters...shrimp, neon tetras, ottos etc.

Young bristle nose plecos are good grazers, but need substantial supplemental food. IME as they get older they will eat your plants, I know, I know the label says plant friendly

That is the problem, indeed. I love their appearance, but I also prefer a little diversity in the tank for viewing interest. Plus, we'll need assistance with algae maintenance.

Is there a different pleco that would be a better option than a single Bristlenose or another fish altogether?

I have read mixed reviews of Siamese Algae eaters. Some accounts claim that they become less effective with age. Other reports state that they become aggressive toward other tank mates.

I definitely do not want to subject the Altums to any potential fin damage or harrassment.

Hey Matt...

I think your information on SAEs is accurate.

IMO if you are going with a planted tank, then algae should not be an issue, except for the occasional green algae on the glass.
