ok...so i have been doing this for over ten years....and what i ask is should i wait for the nitrates to get high before i do a water change or should i just do one anyway after 30 days

Either approach should work. I would prefer to test for a predefined level and then change the water out. Once you know how quickly that level of nitrate accumulates you can then go to a time based system with spot checks for sanity.
