| Algae problem I have a glass hood that is covered in algae because when the bubbles from the bubblers pop, a bit of water goes up and eventually I have a lot of algae on the hood that turns my water green. (because the light is shining through it.) I don't really want to lower my water level because for some reason, it really really bothers me if the water is too low. Any ideas on how to stop the buildup of algea?
thanks!

| Re: Algae problem maybe you could lessen the time you have your light on. or you could just wipe the hood down every week when you do ur maintenance and that will probally solve ur problem

| Re: Algae problem Do you think it would work if I sprayed something like lysol on there, wiped it down thoroughly. That might slow it down maybe.

no i think that would be a really bad idea. your water would look like you have an oil slick in the mid atlantic lol. i dont think there is anyother way to stop it other than 1. lowering your water or 2. slowing down the rate of the bubbles but that might not even matter cause its the popping of the bubbles thats getting the hood wet right?

This would probably work wonders!
As it could kill your fish and then you'd have no reason to leave the light on.
in all seriousness tho, keep chemicals away

| Re: Algae problem Little tip: I use a strip of electrical tape around the top of my tanks glass area so the water level can be a little lower and you don't have the "Light leakage" from your hood. |

| Re: Algae problem You can hardly ever wipe things like that completely off. Your best bet would be to use soap and water, or even better just warm water.
Clean it in your sink and towel dry.
The lysol, even if it stays on the glass, wont do much to stop algae growth... More like harm your fish.

| Re: Algae problem Since we can't vacuum the back of the 46g with the lid on, periodically (not every week) we take the glass top all the way off ... and put it in the bathtub under the shower whilst we finish vacuuming etc. By the time we are ready to put the top back on, a quick wipe with a paper towel pretty much does the trick. Not Martha Stewart clean, but the fishies aren't quite as persnickety... |
