Thank you so much for the feedback everyone. The funny thing is that I would love a cichlid tank due to the beautiful saltwater like colors they come in but decided against that due to my inexperience. Seeing they require a little more attention to detail I figured a community tank was the newbie way to go.

Even though my tank is a 45g I am going to keep the number of fish to a minimum. I am thinking of having a group of about 11 schooling fish and a few dwarf gouramis for the most part. I am sure a couple odd balls will make the cut but I havent decided on that yet.
