| high nitrates and diatoms now:( Nitrates are steady climbing in all 3 tanks. I know the new 29 gal will be crazy for awhile.
My 55 gal, have nitrate at 40 and just a touch of Ammonia. test kit is showing yellow, but I can see a tiny change towards green since yesterday.
10 gal has nitrates climbing, and lots of diatoms, Do diatoms stink? It was sorta nasty cleaning the decor.
Did 50% w/c today in all 3 tanks. cleaned the 10 and 55 gal filters real good, but didnt put in new ones.
I know most of us hit a low spot when the tank/tanks start having problems, and sure enough, I want to toss the tanks, but I know this can be fixed.

Diatoms aren't really a given in a new tank, but the door is wide open for them so it isn't really a surprise to hear about your current situation. Once you have your tanks cycled and steady, you will have a lot less problems and/or be able to do more about the diatoms. |

| Re: high nitrates and diatoms now:( Cyano? I checked out a few sites, and I have no idea what they are talking about, except its some sort of an algae. I dont see any brown, black, blue or green algae in the 10 gal tank. I'll be doing a 25% w/c today and I'll let you know if it still 'stinks'. Theres prob a nicer word than stinks, but it works for me. tx Jay.
