Hey, I wasn't suggesting Sarin, Agent Orange, or Mustard Gas. Just little ol' Poly Ethylene.

(Tetra-brand Algae Control.) I don't believe I experienced nor did I expect a bacteria-culture kill. Just the algae. Which, after dose #2, did go away. To the dismay of my otos - which was my management mistake which I was offering as a lesson learned the hard way.
Sodium Bicarbonate is a chemical too. Yet I doubt anyone with sub-par kH would be well-advised to avoid it. For that matter you, me AND our bacteria cultures are just collections of chemicals flying in loose formation. Concentrated chlorine might not be good for an aquatic bacteria culture. But that does not make all chemicals strictly detrimental. Used wisely, chemicals can be and usually are our friends.
Even dreaded arch-chemical ammonia - widely considered something to be avoided if possible and eliminated if found - is now being used, in fishless cycling, to produce and nurture those desirable bacteria.
We should all go out and hug a chemical today!
