| canister filters ive decided i will buy a canister filter for my new 80 gallon tank. (thats the ones that sit outside the tank i think) the 2 contributing factors are aesthetics and hopefully quieter operation.
im looking for advice on which brands people have had success with, any recommendations will be well recieved, i have no idea which manufacturers are reliable. if theres already a thread please just steer me to it.
fluval looks to have a nice one, FLUVAL 305, if thats a good move let me know. cost isnt really an issue, so long as the product performs as advertised.
thanks for all the help. |

| Re: canister filters I have the fluval 204 and it works very well but I find it hard to get started, other than that it is a good filter.

Since you mentioned cost really isn't an issue I would recommend Eheim. For an 80 gallon tank an Eheim Pro II 2026 would be a good fit. Eheims are super reliable and provide excellent filtration and are virtually silent.
I have a classic 2217 and a wet dry 2227 on my 92 gallon and they work awesome. |

| Re: canister filters i am a big fan of the fluval canister filters and the rena's. i have a fluval 305 on my 55 and a rena xp1 on my 10 gallon. i think you will need to go up a step on the fluval maybe something like a 404/405. they are very easy to hide under the tank and all have to do is close the valves and disconect them and clean them its a breeze. good luck with your choice

| Re: canister filters I have recently purchased 2 of the Marineland canister filters and they seem to be good products. The parts that go in the tank seem a little flimsy but the canisters themselves are solid and disconnect with the flip of a latch for cleaning. I have several of the Marineland biowheel filters and have had great luck with them.
For quiet, in my 29 gal bedroom tank I bought extra long hose at the hardware store and put the filter in the basement on a ledge, (still within the max 6 feet). It's so quiet in the bedroom I hear the heater click on and off. |

| Re: canister filters ok thanks alot guys, sounds like theres a few good brands out there, i guess it will come down to which one is quieter.
ive seen a few other threads indicating overkill is just right, so i think i will get something in the 100+ gallon rating range to make sure im covered.
my project should be done in a month or two, i look forward to posting more questions and finally some pics when im done. |

| Re: canister filters I have the ehiem 2217 on my 55 gal. it is rated for 120 and I am really happy with it. Low maintenance and excellent performance and very quiet running, the only media I have to replace on a regular basis is the cotton and coarse filter floss, I use no charcoal at all and the rest of the media rinses clean really well with some tank water poured through. Start up can be a pain the very first time but after that it will self start as long as you open the hoses up in the correct order.

| Re: canister filters I would recommend a fluvol 405, that's what I use on my 90 gallon. It was easy to set up,came with a CD. It has several baskets for different kinds of media and my water is crystal clear. The best part is it is so quiet that a couple times a day I open up the doors on the stand and touch it to make sure it is still running. I unplug it during feedings and then plug it back in.
