Ok here is the deal I have 3 silver dollar fish which are all about 9 to 10 years old....I looked in my tank two days ago and saw one laying on its side at the bottom of the tank. I tapped the glass and he swims all over the place runs into things etc....I am thinking he is blind? I pulled him out of the tank and put him in my 20 gallon by himself. He lays on the bottom on his side, upside down, and right side up. He will swim around running into things and the glass etc. This has been going on for two days now what do you think? My water is all good tested that, he is old...his fins are really rough and many are missing. Let me know thanks.

Keep him in a dark tank for awhile see if it changes in behavior often pacus, piranha,
tetras ect will do this and once you leave the lights off for a while they go back to normal or at least in my experiences with them.

I do not know how long they live but I will try the dark tank thing

They will live probably 6 more years most fish live at least 16 years even some tetras live longer than that

Hey hyrumbradshaw, Welcome to our forums

It is generally accepted that a Discus' average life span is 11 years.

For Tetras, it is generally accepted that 5-6 years is the max.

As always, your mileage may vary

You may be seeing old age here, and the beginning of system failure.

I have only ever heard of the "darkness" thing being used to correct a fishes tendency to swim at an odd angle due to light (ambient or sun) striking an aquarium on an oblique angle.

I cannot find a reference for this, can you point me toward some?
