It is generally accepted that a Discus' average life span is 11 years.
For Tetras, it is generally accepted that 5-6 years is the max.
As always, your mileage may vary
You may be seeing old age here, and the beginning of system failure.
I have only ever heard of the "darkness" thing being used to correct a fishes tendency to swim at an odd angle due to light (ambient or sun) striking an aquarium on an oblique angle.
