Betta

A friend has a betta fish, and i know they are known to be territorial and fight a lot, but she wants to get a new fish; would it alright to but them together? are there any fish that the betta would get along with?

I'm no expert, but I know a friend of mine had a 6 gallon tank with 2 neon tetras, a siemese (sp?) algae eater, 2 glass cats, an iridescent shark, and a betta. I know really crowded, but he did end up moving a few of them. Anyway, they all lived ok for a while, and one day the betta I guess snapped and attacked one of the tetras eventually killing it. So I guess it could work, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I may be wrong but the betta might of just attacked not only due to its aggressive nature, but because of the excessive amount of fish in the tank at the time. Give a betta some space and some compatiable mates and things probably can work. Also, I have read that neon tetras nip fins and if they nipped the bettas fin he may have went postal on its ass or maybe he just wanted a snack. I don't care what anyone says I hate the idea of bettas in super small containers...I see it all day long and just can not stand it.

The betta could go with a couple of dwarf gouramis. I wouldn't house them in anything less than a 10gal. Gouramis and bettas both have bubble nests and so called "breath" from the waters surface. Just as Hepcat said any fin nippers will "set" them off. They will also attack and kill other long finned fish. IMO betta and dwarf gourmi colors look good together too. Happy fishing

This is very true. It may work out with more space and less fish.

Just wanted to offer a different perspective. I have had Beta's on several occasions in a community tank. I have had them in fairly crowded conditions and not so crowded in tanks ranging from 10 gallon to 75 gallon. In generally I found them to be a fine community fish. In fact I more often had to protect the Beta from gets its long fins nipped at than to protect the other fish from the Beta. It has been a long while since I have done this so the breeding might have changed or something but I always thought 1 in a community tank added a nice flair. Obviously you can only have one of that species and I would shy away from another fish to strongly resembled a Beta although I can not think of any at the moment. In fact I am planning on adding a Beta to my tank in the very near future.
