| how to remove sulfur Hello all,
I have a 65 gallon freshwater tank, I moved to a new home with well water. While moving my belongings in i refilled my tank with our new homes well water, i noticed a strong sulfur smell and bad taste(I grew up on well water so i knew all about the "egg smell" but was shocked at the disgusting taste. ) Anyway i got the filter up and running and let the tank sit for about 2 -4 days . Fish had stayed in large plastic tubs with plants and areator . Fish were healthy and happy in the new tank when i put them in . No problems for several days until i had bumped furnature and a hose for the filter disconnected draining half the tank onto the floor. Fish were fine, so i just added more water from the tap. All fish were dead in a matter minutes. within one or two minutes the fish were belly up on the surface. our neighbors home had a fuel oil spill and so the whole neighborhood has filters for the watersupply, uv, charcoal, etc set up and maintained by the dec and it is tested every other month and there are no hazardous materials in the water. The entire area is known for sulfur wells, where rotten egg and bad taste do not begin to describe the problem. Is it the sulfur that most likely killed the fish? I understand that the sulfur is in a gas form and evaporates naturally and can be hurried up by adding air bubbles and water movement. Could that be why the fish did not die when i added them iniatially? I think i want to change one five gallon jug of water a week. I was so disgusted by what happened with my fish i have not kept fish for 3 years but now i am going to get some fish again. If anyone has had similar experiences let me know how you dealt with the sulfur water problems and any techniques that worked for you. Thanks, |
