Currently, i have a 3 glo lite tetras, 3 red eyed ballon tetras, 1 small angelfish and 2 scavengers in a 10 gallon freshwater tropical tank. the person at my local aquarium shop said that because the tetras are small, i could have about 20 small fish in my aquarium. i also heard that each inch of tropical freshwater fish needs 1 gallon of water. what should i go by and can i add in some more 1-2 inch sized fish??

The general rule of thumb is 1" of fish per 1 gal of tank, which in a 10 gallon tank is probably somewhere between 8-9 gallons after you figure in decorations and substrate. Overfiltering will allow you to stock the tank at higher densities, but I don't have enough experience with Tetra to give you an intelligent answer. I know in Cichlid tanks you often overcrowd and overfilter to curb aggression, but African Cichlids come from very densely populated lakes.

I would probably stay in the 8 to 9 inches of fish range, but hopefully someone who keeps Tetra can give you a better idea.

I keep tetras. I have 2 lemon tetras, 2 black skirt tetras, 2 albino cory cats, 2 kuli loaches, and a female beta in my tank. I have a 20 gallon filter on mine to. I did have 2 more black phantom tetras and 2 red sword tails. I moved the swordtails and both black phantom tetras died. My tank is doing quite well now with 9 small fish. The best thing I ever put were the bottom feeders, they keep my tank clear. I don't reccomend over 8 fish if you have a small filter even with tetras, better to put less than too many. I would get the angel fish out and use another tank for it and maybe one or two other angel fish and your tank should look good. I will post a picture or two of mine in a few minutes maybe.

The one inch per gallon rule is a general fallacy. As long as the bioload of your tank can handle the natural byproducts of the fish, and the fish have enough room to do what they are supposed to do without being harassed, then you are fine.

sorry to say but your tank has few problems i think id should mention.

well first of all, tetras are schooling fish there fore its a good idea to keep them in groups of atleats 5. i recomend focusing on one specie.

second of all, withe the scavengers, im assuming you mean corydoras? if so, they like to be in groups but a pair is okay

lastly angels grow far too large for a 10 gallon, ive seem angels at 5 inches tall. the largest wide bodied fish you can add in a tank of 10 gallons is a paradise fish or a dwarf gourami.

with some few touchup you tank can be a masterpiece!
