TBX, I think you need to be more concise when referring to parrot cichlids and clarify which fish you are referring to as many people won't know, so could be misleading.
It's only people that are interested in BIZZARE fish that are willing to pay for them. In many instances they are mis-informed about the origin of these fish, and they end up being returned to the LFS or thrown into local waterways!
There are two kinds of cichlids called parrot cichlids.
Hoplarchus psittacus is a large
green cichlid which is found in the Amazon River and gets its name from a large parrot-like mouth. It's a big fish at over 12 inches in length.This fish is NOT a deformity and occurs naturally in the wild.
The fish you are referring to I think (??) is sold as the red parrot cichlid (also now available in many other colors) - and yes, they are common and very popular in pet stores.
Just to Clarify - These fish are NOT a deformity. They are a "Man Made" ** hybrid ** fish.
