Cloudy water

My 20 gal tank is cloudy...I have tried cleaning, new water, new gravel, everything I can think of and nothing seems to work. The 55 gal. and the 10 gal are fine. I have mollies, guppies and an algae eater with a few snails...There are never more than 20 to 25 adult fish in the tank and I feed a non-cloudy food. HELP!!!!

what color cloudy is it? white or green? and how long after you change the water does it become cloudy again? and how long does it stay cloudy before you do something? sorry about all the questions, just need more info to help solve the problem. oh and how long has the tank been set up for?

You may have Ich/Ick or whitespot disease. It is a type of parasite. The parasite may even infect your fish if they rub up against objects in the tank that contain the parasite.

You may want to increase the temperature in your tank. And/or add meds to the tank water of copper and foramlin. You may also add a little bit of salt also depending on what kind of fish you have.

I have found the water will do that, if I do a water change and filter change on the same day. I have not been able to eliminate the problem completely, as it still happens a little on a filter change, but it is less cloudy if I do one then wait a couple weeks and do the other. I try to let the filter build up bacteria for a week or so before I do a full or partial water change.

I was just reading my way around this forum, a really friendly place by the way

and had to respond to this.

White cloudy water is NOT ich. Ich is a parasite but it not present in sufficient numbers to cause cloudy water.

White cloudy water is one of two things or both.

1. Microscopic dust from the substrate (called fines) which may take months to clear up; it is the result of underwasing the gravel before using it. It is stirred into the water column by agitation from water changes. A diatom filter will make short work of it, a power filter will not.

2. It is a bacterial bloom (no panic needed, it is annoying but harmless), it is common in new tank setups 1-3 months. It will go away by itself. I had one once that lived in a corner of the tank, actually moved around some or spread out to give me an annoying haze. One day it just vanished.

3. Sometimes it is a combination of both, remember this is an organic environment.

Don't try to nuke it!

Ha, I found Jay's first post!!!

And look he was a knowladgable guy then too! I believe I speak for all of us here on the forum when I say THANK YOU JAY FOR ALL THE THINGS YOU HAVE HELPED US THROUGH!

I had to go back 70 pages to find this post and Wahlah! there it was.

Now if you were trying to find my first post you would only have to go back a few pages but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about!

Oh and for the cloudy water, no it's not ick.
