Neon Tetra

I have 12 Neon Tetra's in my 20 gal. All was well until two days ago one Neon became agressive towards the others. Nipping tails to an extreme. I researched and all I find is they are easy going and get along well.

Any idea why one would turn agressive?
Do you think the tail nipping is causing bad injury to the others?
Not that I like this idea

BUT... do you get rid of the "Bad Apple"?

Whats with the Nitrite? What is your Ammonia Reading?

Nitrite that high is going to stress your fish, Neons do not do well in adverse water conditions!

I would look there first.

If one of them is causing physical damage to the others, maybe it should be separated for a bit, your call, until you get the nitrites fixed.

Let me whisper this

, as I do not advocate salt in a FW aquarium, and don't want to be misunderstood by others. Salt (NaCl aka Table Salt) 4 tsp. added to your 20 gal. during the course of the day will help with the stress of high nitrites. Will NOT detox it but will ease the stress on the fish. When you fix the nitrite problem you can water change and dilute the salt out.

My Bad, I typed a few numbers wrong:

It should have been:
Nitrite at 0.5-1.0
Nitrate at 10-15
PH at 6.8-7.0
Ammonia at .25
GH-60

Understand I am still using the test strips. I know its not the Master Kit yet, but better then going to the LFS everyday.

I do see what your saying,
I just have not finished with cycle yet. It was going well but then I cleaned my filters from all the left over "Gold Fish waste" but I made a bad mistake. I cleaned with tap water. Then I read and learned I should have used the "water change water". I guess I greatly hurt my BioFilter that was building so well. Still learning. I just have to slow down and keep following yalls instructions. The nitrite was doing much better the other day before I goofed!

I have taken everyone back to my friends house for safe keeping (not that he knows what he is doing but his tank has been running for a long time. I will slow down and wait this time. (I guess moving my guys back and forth the past two weeks are just stressing the Neons. Poor Guys!

Not necessarily "greatly" remember the bacteria are colonizing the "whole tank" not just the filter media.

Perhaps a minor ooops!
