They were actually Leopard Puffers, which prefer a brackish environment. I kept them for years in a regular FW/non-salt tank because that's how they came. Upon further reading, I figured out that they needed some salt (brackish). It was the OTHER fish (the eel) that didn't appreciate us trying to add salt. I don't think the puffers were affected by the salt addition.
Also, I was adding aquarium salt and trying to get the hydrometer to read for a more (but slight) brackish salinity. I didn't realize I needed actual "saltwater tank" salt....like Jarrett posted, we don't know much about the saltwater setup at all.
In any case, now Jarrett is shy about adding salt to our new 55gal tank. We only have community fish, the puffers were killed, ... I mean they passed away (

).
Our new tank has Mollies, Platys, Gourami, Tetra, Danio, catfish, peacock eel, chinese algae eater, and 3 DWARF puffers (definitely FW).
I must admit, I didn't read the article about the salt... but I just always thought that you add a bit of 'aquarium salt' to FW tanks anyway. But, like I said, Jarrett is hisitant to because of our last mishap

, sorry.
The fish are all doing fine right now.
We've had the tank set up for 4 days.
