I have 1 really big goldfish in a 10 gallon tank measuring about 5-6 inches lengthwise and about 3 inches width. It is about 3 years old. We are going away on vacation for about 10 days. Will 1 10-day feeding shell be enough to keep our 1 large goldfish alive? My daughter wants us to leave 2 shells, but I feel 2 is too much and will dirty the tank.

One shell should be fine. You could actually get away with just feeding him before you leave and just let him ride the 10 days out. Fish can survive a good week or more without food. After all, in the wild food can sometimes be scarce, and they will go periods of a couple weeks between eating.

Just to be on the safe side though leave one. I would agree on not leaving two for the reason of decomposition dirtying your water and poisoning him with ammonia buildup before you can return.

Thank you very much for your wise advice about
feeding our very large fish. I will leave only 1
feeding shell and that should keep it happy.
