| Is it cruel to dye your fish? Day - Glo I came across an article on fish that are dyed. I knew that there were such fish. Because I always wanted to get a few. But always hesitated of buying them.
But this is a great aritcle on how they go through the process of dying the fish. http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.u...?article_id=72 |

| I think it is horrible, and it isn't even permanent. To be honest I have had a terrible time with dyed fish. My daughter insisted that she needed some for her birthday, so with her birthday money in tow I took her to the pet store. We came home with a purple and pink painted glass fish, they lasted about 3-4 weeks and then died. That was the 2nd attempt at dyed fish, and I can't seem to get any of them to last more than a month or two. |

| My first thought was "why?" Tropical fish are breathtaking. What on earth possessed someone to think they needed to inject these beauties with color?
My second thought was "Why" also. Why would you want something that had been injected with dye? Would you want a floresant dog running around your yard? (strike that. Now that I've pictured it in my head it might be cool )
Point is, nature is naturally colorful, bright, and fun. Why mess with it? |

| It seems cut and dry, if you want a colorful fish to buy one that nature provides. You wouldn't dye a puppy or a kitten, why dye a fish? I know for sure that I will never buy any more of them, natural colors for us from here on out. |

| I don't understand why people would want to dye fish either. I think that it's very cruel and doesn't make any sense. There are lots of beautiful fish out there with beautiful natural colors. |

| Lindsey...
People who have never seen a group of German Blue Rams, a community of Endlers Live-bearers, groupings of neon blue dwarf rainbow fish, or 50 Neon Tetras contrasted against a lush green planted background, would probably buy these fish on a whim. There is no room in any serious fish keeping community I know of or belong to that would tolerate this. It is profiteering and exploitation at its worst.

| Don't hold back, Jay. Tell us how you really feel.
I agree with you though. Stick to nature, the truth is always better than fiction. |

| LoL Sorry I am prone to an occasional rant. Please be assured it was not a personal criticism, just another example of folks in the hobby being ripped off by profiteers.

| I can't imagine doing this to a fish. Why would anyone who cares about their pets do such a thing?
And I'm not just speaking as the parent of a child with dye allergies, either, but it does help me to remember just how much we put into our own bodies that we shouldn't.

Jay | I think its cool that you are so concerned for these fish. It's what is going to make the difference in the practice in the end. |
