i forgot to mention that i also think your fish would be killed.. the oscar would probably eat it accidentally, and for long term situations the oscar and jack spell disaster..


p.s. that african won't last long. unless the jack and oscar are small as well... i had an unfortunate incident with a firemouth and some african about the same size once... that was my first, and last, attempt at mixing south americans with africans.

Well I wouldn't recommend it at all infact you may wake up one morning and you'll have a couple ov Dead Danios too..All may look peaceful at first but then there will be carnage..I placed a small Jack Dempsey(that had been taking a licking in my chiclid tank) in my Pond fish tank with big Gold fish and one platty...all was good for 2 nights then I woke up to find my platty upside down with no eyes left...sorry to be so blunt but be warned..

So far the M. Johanni cichlid rules the tank but all and all it is peaceful. I will get my other 55 gallon setup soon so I'll have options if their is turmoil.

I read that Jacks and Oscars cohabitated well.
I printed this suggestion list from some site , not sure where now.

Cichlids: Buttikoferi, Green Terror, Jack Dempsey, Manganese, and Red Devil


were all suggested as safe.

Well, I think right now you have it pretty easy since all of the fish you have are small, judging from your picture anyways.

It it possible that the website you got that list from is thinking that the larger size of the Oscar would make it more apt to get picked on less by the JD. From what I have read and heard about Oscars, they are pretty much peaceful fish, however if an issue does arise, they are also strong enough to do some damage. In fact, I believe that it is usually recomended not to have larger rocks or decor in an Oscar's tank since they are able and more than willing to redecorate on their own, possibly breaking the glass or something similar.

I guess that in reality all of this is going to depend on your unique situation and I have heard of much less likely scenarios working out well for some people when it was a disaster for most others. Still, I dont think that the betta would fare very well in this tank. They are just too easy of a target.

I would do just as you said you plan on in that you watch closely and get ready to act if things go bad or get out of control.

Betta is dead (I think) I left the cover off his box and he must have jumped into the tank. Didn't think he'd be able to clear and inch but he must have. Now there is no sign of him at all. Not a trace. I have caves but he doesn't seem to be in any of them. I am 98% certain the cichlids devoured him.

Lessons:
Small cichlids will eat a Betta and sooner rather than later.
Betta can jump quite far out of the water and will.
