I like this post a lot, I have a heater on my African tank because I live in Ohio and it can be 100 degrees one day and 50 the next and I know drastic temp changes are stressful for fish. I guess I set my tank at 78-82 because that is what I read I should do. I guess Africa is pretty warm place so the my assumption was the goal was to replicate that. I guess I have never really questioned why though. I guess for me it's mostly to avoid large temp swings in the tank on a regular basis.

Well actually that is what I thought to begin with but after further research I found that they keep all their tanks at that temp whether it is young Discus that are for sale, breeders, apparently does not matter. I think it is just a matter of being the best all around temp for the fish. I know that my salties are much more active and appear to be more content at the higher temp. Anyway, to each his own and whatever works the best for them and their fishy friends!
