I am trying to think this through, I have a single tank, freshwater, 65 gallons which is located in my main living area on the carpet. I fore see my wife wanting to replace the carpet sometime down the road. The Glass tank sits on a hardwood stand/cabinet. I know the tank is suppose to be empty prior to moving. But wondering if anyone has ever done this and may have some advice? I visualize emptying it down to about 6 inches of water left in the tank, carefully moving the whole cabinet with the tank on the stand a short distance, then add 10 gallons of saved water in two - 5 gallon water containers back in while carpet is being installed, maybe run a power head. Drain, ten gallons back out, move back and fill up. Looking for tips, suggestions, any words of advice.

The reason for emptying the tank is because any weight in the tank is more weight that could cause a twisting of the tank. Any twisting can cause the sealant between the glass panels to release and then leak. Any time you move a tank you take that chance.
The only advice I have is the emptier the better and be very careful.
A leaking tank would sure make a new carpet worthless.

I have successfully moved a tank that had about 6inches of water in it about 3 feet. however, takee extra precautions as a few hours out of your day is much better than days and days of trying to dry that brand new carpet! I would get the water as low as possible if I were you. The tank that I moved was a 29g. 6inches of water in a 29 is much much different than moving 6inches in a 65g.

how about trying this. if you have a rubbermaid bucket or even the 5 gallon buckets will work depending on how many fish you have. put some gravel and decorations in the buckets and empty the tank while you are getting new carpets. i would suggest the rubber maid containers they are like 20 bucks from walmart. and depending on what kind of filter you have HOB or canister just put it in the container. make sure to save as much water as possible for when you fill th tank back up

Then there is the lazy man's way to look at it as if the tank is never going to be moved, when the time comes, re-carpet right up to it.
